South Suburban College was selected to receive 1.5 million in funding via a Workforce Development Grant. The project is designed to create, support and expand short-term workforce training opportunities in high need areas. Made possible by the leadership of State Representative Thaddeus Jones and the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, the grant is designed to help students quickly prepare for in demand careers and promote diversity simultaneously.

The project provides wrap-around services including financial assistance and academic support to participating students within five program areas providing stackable credentials including Nursing and Patient Care Technician (PCT), Basic Nursing Assistance Training Program (BNATP), Community Healthcare Worker (CHW), Certified Production Technician (CPT), and Barber Technician (BT).

“We are so pleased to receive this grant for the benefits it will provide to our student participants, as well as its establishment of new highly employable career programs,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Chairman of the SSC Board of Trustees.

These are fields which are in demand and provide solid salaries for new entrants. Some of the programs provide a certificate upon completion which can be done in a single semester. This is an opportunity for people seeking to find a path to good employment and is of clear benefit to area business as well as our community.

“Education is the foundation of healthy lives and strong communities,” said Rep Thaddeus Jones. “Fighting for the people of our community and their futures is at the heart of what I do as State Representative. I appreciate my colleagues who worked to help make this possible.”
